Lessons Getting Ready

You DO NOT need to pass your theory test before taking driving lessons.

Preparation: Before You Start

Complete A Licence Check

Once you have your first lesson arranged you will have to provide a code that will allow your licence to be checked online. you can generate this code by visiting the gov.uk website.

You can use this service to:

  • view your driving record, for example vehicles you can drive
  • check your penalty points or disqualifications
  • create a 'check code' to share your driving record with someone

The check code will be valid for 21 days.

You'll need:

  • your driving licence number
  • your National Insurance number
  • the postcode on your driving licence

To allow me to check your licence you should provide me with the case-sensitive code, as well as the last eight digits of your Driver Number.

Legal Requirement Pass Minimum Eyesight Check

You must also be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate made after 1 September 2001 from 20 metres.

You must also meet the minimum eyesight standard for driving by having a visual acuity of at least decimal 0.5 (6/12) measured on the Snellen scale (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) using both eyes together or, if you have sight in one eye only, in that eye.

You must also have an adequate field of vision - your optician can tell you about this and do a test.

If you fail the minimum eyesight then your first lesson shall be a theory based session, charged at the full applicable rate.

Getting Better Planned Tuition

Attitude is critical to a new driver's approach, both to their own driving and to the actions and mistakes of other road users.

If you are a novice, you need to use your sense of responsibility, patience and courtesy to develop the skills necessary to become a good driver.

A great deal of what you'll learn will depend on your instructor.

A planned approach to learning is essential, particularly in the early stages.

Each lesson will be matched to your needs and abilities. There are no short cuts to becoming a good driver.

The best way to learn is by having:

  • regular planned lessons
  • as much practice as possible.

Once you have mastered the basics it is a good idea to combine your lessons with as much practice as possible with suitable family members or friends. Remember, your accompanying driver should be over 21 and should have held their full licence for a minimum of 3 years.

Total Drive The Student App

I use an online diary and record system called Total Drive.

This system gives you access to a free app for Android and iOS. I will send you text details of how to download and log in.

Utilising this app will allow you to monitor your booked and past lessons, payments, reflective logs and progress records.
