Manoeuvres Pull Up On The Right
Introduction
This is one of the new manoeuvres that were added to the Driving Test in 2017.
There are 3 parts to this manoeuvre:
- Pull up on the right-hand side of the road
- Reverse for 2 car lengths
- Rejoin the traffic

Manoeuvre Instruction
You will normally be asked to do this on a fairly straight and pretty quiet road - but there might be a light flow of traffic to keep your eye on.
You'll be asked to pull up on the right-hand side when it's safe to do so.
As with everything you do on the road, the first thing to do is your mirror, signal, manoeuvre checks.
As with turning right you may have to move across the flow of traffic coming towards you, so it's really important to make sure it's safe before you move. Take up a position just to the left of the centre lines and, once you've indicated right, gently move over and pull up on the right-hand side - being careful not to hit the kerb.
Manoeuvre Reversing 2 Car Lengths
Once you're stationary, you'll be asked to reverse for around 2 car lengths.
The purpose of this reverse is to simulate creating a suitable gap to improve your visibility should there be a vehicle parked directly in front of you.
Don't worry if you don't know EXACTLY what this distance is - it's a simulation of clearing enough room to improve your visibility. But it's still important you have a good feel for how far that is.
If another driver pulls in front of you before or during the manoeuvre, the examiner will advise you on what to do - like moving further back to increase the space again. If a driver blocks you from reversing completely, the manoeuvre will be stopped and attempted later on in the test.
Finishing Off Rejoining The Traffic
The last part of this manoeuvre is rejoining the traffic and the main thing to remember here is that your blind spots will now be on your left side.
Make sure you do your checks - mirror, signal, manoeuvre before you go.
I always recommend that my pupils take a quick second blind spot check as they move off.
What the examiner is looking for:
- Show proper care for the safety of other roads users at all times
- Prove that you're competent with reversing and moving off unsupervised
- Your overall awareness, planning and judgement skills
- Observation, Observation, Observation!!!
